Driving in Barbados

Driving in Barbados is a great way to explore the island’s many attractions. Barbados used to be a British colony, so we drive on the left-hand side of the road. The minimum age for visitors renting a car in Barbados is 21 years. Wearing seatbelts is compulsory for both drivers and passengers.

Road Network

The island has a vast network of roads that can get you anywhere on the island in a reasonably short time (considering traffic). In the rural areas the roads can be narrow and winding, and some roads may not be well-marked. However, with a little preparation and caution, you can safely explore the island by car. If you have mobile data available through local mobile service providers, you can use Google Maps, Bing maps or Waze to easily navigate the island and find your desired location.

Speed Limits

On general roads the speed limit is 60 km/h or 37 mph. On highways the speed limit is 80 km/h or 50mph. Please note that these are general guidelines and that specific speed limits may be posted in certain areas. It’s important to always obey posted speed limits and drive safely.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts are a common feature of the road network in Barbados. They are used to manage traffic flow at intersections and are designed to improve safety and reduce congestion. When driving in Barbados, it’s important to know how to navigate roundabouts safely.

Here are some tips for driving in roundabouts in Barbados:

  • Yield to traffic already in the roundabout: When approaching a roundabout, you must yield to any traffic already there. Wait for a gap in traffic before entering the roundabout.
  • Stay in your lane: When driving in a roundabout, you must stay in your lane and not change lanes. Use your turn signal to indicate which exit you plan to take.
  • Exit the roundabout carefully: When exiting the roundabout, use your turn signal to indicate that you are exiting and watch for pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Be aware of the speed limit: Be sure to slow down when approaching a roundabout and maintain a safe speed while driving through it.
Be patient: Roundabouts can be confusing, especially if you’re not used to driving in them. Be patient and take your time when navigating a roundabout.
